Patriotic Costume Ideas

Make this year the Halloween that your family members go patriotic with their costumes!

Costumes have changed over the years from handmade and simple to elaborate and costly. They range from timeless ideas you see from year-to-year to the newest superhero. These days, more adults are joining children in the tradition of dressing up for fun.

Here are a few America-focused and U.S. history-based costume suggestions that can show your patriotism:

– Statue of Liberty

– Uncle Sam

– George Washington

– Betsy Ross

– Edith Hobart (the American Legion Auxiliary’s first national president)

– Captain America

– A servicemember representing any branch of the U.S. military

– Abraham Lincoln

When you take your patriotic-outfitted little ones trick-or-treating, bring along some brochures about the American Legion Auxiliary, and other parts of The American Legion Family. You could briefly chat about patriotism and the Legion Family with adults who give your child candy. If those individuals show an interest in what you are saying, you will have brochures to give them. This can also work if your family attends a local Halloween parade or party.

Who knows? You may get people interested in what we do, and even gain a new member or two, just by dressing in a patriotic costume and handing out information. Be sure to practice ahead of time what to say about the Auxiliary and/or Legion Family if you get asked questions about the organizations.

This is an easy, fun, and patriotic way to get the word out in your community about who we are, what we do, and why we matter!
