The United States has already experienced the first deadly tornado of the 2019 tornado season. On March 3, a tornado hit Lee County, Ala. That EF4 tornado killed 23 people. Unfortunately, our country may see even more tornadoes this spring. According to the National Weather Service, tornado season is March through May.
Following a tornado, those affected may have a financial setback due to loss of shelter, food, and other expenses that occur. This is where the American Legion Auxiliary can help with the Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF). AEF is a national grant assistance program that helps eligible members of the American Legion Auxiliary by providing temporary emergency help following a natural disaster or other crises.
To be eligible, the person applying must have been an American Legion Auxiliary member for at least the immediate past two consecutive years. Also, current membership dues must be paid at the time the emergency occurs (three consecutive years’ dues).
The maximum grant amount is $2,400, disbursed as the Auxiliary Emergency Fund Grant Committee determines. Funds may only be used for emergency shelter, food, or utilities. To qualify for the disaster relief grant, a member must apply within three months of the occurrence of the disaster.
Eligible ALA members can apply for an AEF Expedited Disaster grant by logging in to the Members Only section of the national website at www.ALAforVeterans.org. Members may also request an application by contacting their unit or department headquarters. The AEF Grant Committee will review the member’s application. The committee is comprised of representatives from ALA National Headquarters and The American Legion.
You can also donate to the Auxiliary Emergency Fund. You can find the ALA’s secure online donation form at www.ALAforVeterans.org. Under “select a fund,” choose Auxiliary Emergency Fund. You can also donate by mail:
