The ALA offers five $2,000 scholarships for non-traditional students. The Non-Traditional Student Scholarship aids American Legion Family members, veterans, active-duty servicemembers, or veterans’ spouses to pursue a degree later in life or pick back up to finish. To learn more, go to www.ALAforVeterans.org/scholarships.

Tiffany Orlando received the Non-Traditional Student Scholarship to further her education, pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at the University of Phoenix. She is on track to graduate this year.

Orlando is a Paid Up For Life American Legion Auxiliary member eligible through her family’s long service in the military, with her father Michael Immel, U.S. Navy veteran, and her grandfathers Terry Grozinger, West Virginia Air National Guard veteran, Lyle Immel, U.S. Navy veteran, and Paul Sine, U.S. Marine Corps veteran. She also had great-grandfathers who served during World War I and World War II.

What does your Auxiliary membership mean to you?
Being a member of the American Legion Auxiliary represents a deep and enduring commitment to honoring and supporting those who have served our nation. I view my involvement as both a privilege and continuation of my family’s proud legacy of military service. Through meaningful acts of service, I strive to strengthen veterans, their families, and my community.

What degree are you pursuing, and how will this degree help you on your professional journey?
I am currently pursuing an MBA. This degree is enhancing my leadership, strategic planning, and organizational management skills — key areas that support both my professional growth and my continued service through the American Legion Auxiliary. The program allows me to apply business principles to real-world challenges, strengthen decision-making, and lead with purpose in both my career and community initiatives.

Tell us about your non-traditional student journey, and how you qualify for this scholarship.
After earning my bachelor’s degree eight years ago, I entered the workforce and began building my professional career. Over time, I realized that continuing my education would help me grow as a leader, strengthen my business knowledge, and create new opportunities for advancement.

How does this scholarship benefit you?
The Non-Traditional Student Scholarship has been an incredible source of support throughout my educational journey. It has helped ease the financial burden of returning to school while allowing me to focus on my studies and professional development. It reminds me that the American Legion Auxiliary believes in investing in its members’ growth and success, and it motivates me to continue giving back through service, education, and leadership.

Based on your journey, what would you like ALA members to know about the impact of this type of scholarship?
Providing scholarships like the Non-Traditional Student Scholarship truly makes a lasting difference in the lives of members who are striving to further their education. For many of us, returning to school while managing careers, families, and community responsibilities can be challenging, both financially and personally. This scholarship not only helps relieve financial stress but also serves as a powerful reminder that the Auxiliary stands behind its members — encouraging us to grow, achieve, and lead. It represents more than financial assistance; it is a vote of confidence that empowers recipients to continue serving others while pursuing their academic and professional goals.

What advice do you have for other non-traditional students?
Believe in yourself and trust that it is never too late to continue your education. Returning to school as an adult can feel overwhelming at times, but persistence, organization, and self-confidence make all the difference. Set clear goals, manage your time wisely, and remember that progress — no matter how small — is still progress. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your journey, and celebrate your achievements along the way.
