Happy Father’s Day!

Posted On: Friday, 18 June 2021

Fathers often pass on wise words to their children – words that offer encouragement, support, and how to be an overall good person.

This Father’s Day, we honor the special dads in our lives.

American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters recently asked our Facebook followers to tell us about Dad. Here is what some ALA members had to say:

“My dad, Jack, was on the ground crew for the Memphis Belle. This picture is from the documentary Cold Blue. Dad taught me to respect all veterans. In 1968, he helped The American Legion fundraise to build a Freedom Fountain for all branches of the military.”
- Jerilynn Kabel

“My dad taught me a good work ethic and to help people when you can. I appreciate everything my dad has done for me. As an adult, I try to do things for him. Thank you for your service, Dad.”
-Marsha Gross

“My dad, Fred Fredensburg, loved spending Father's Day at The American Legion Post 291. He was a Navy veteran and lived to 100!”
-Julie Fredensburg Tyner

“My dad, Bill Shubert, was one of a kind and a true inspiration. He was a Vietnam veteran, 1st Calvary Army. He always told me not to be afraid to pursue any goals or dreams. He also taught me by example — anything can be fixed with duct tape! He was an amazing musician who played by ear and had a unique talent of picking up any instrument and learning to play it without help. He was also a fantastic artist who airbrushed paintings for 30 years. He taught me how to play guitar, how to draw and paint, and of course, how to use duct tape! He was always very outgoing and never met a stranger. I was very fortunate to have such a talented and kind-hearted dad!”
-Shane Shubert

“My daddy, Vincente Lovato, served during the Korean War Era. I miss him very much every day. He passed away at the early age of 55. I miss his laugh and drinking coffee with him. He loved to dance.”
-Janet Romero

“I am a proud Coastie’s daughter. My dad instilled in us a love of country and pride in volunteering for others!”
-Paulette Caron

“Daddy instilled a great work ethic and told us, ‘Remember to laugh in life because it is too short.’ I would tell my dad I have passed those values to my daughter too.”
-Susan Schultz

“My dad — my hero — Vietnam veteran Jerry Melton, is a three-time Department of Indiana District 9 commander. He’s an all-around great person. I am who I am today because of him. He taught me to never quit and always do my best. Fight for what is right, because evil only wins when good people do nothing! My love of God and country was instilled by him as well. He taught me how to work on my car, home repair, and how to sew (yes, you read that right — my dad can sew). I’m blessed to have him as my dad. He’s one of a kind!
-Shannone Shubert

“My dad said, ‘Hug a veteran. It will make a bad day good and a good day better.’”
-Kimberley Anne Palasota

“My dad was a Korean War veteran. He first joined while still on active duty in 1954 at Panama City Post 1. He taught me the importance of education, working hard, and family. Always give back to your community. One of my favorite memories is going with him and his two brothers who are Legionnaires to the Friday night Legion dinners. Because of him, I can say I'm a proud 53-year member of the Auxiliary.”
-Nicky Flores-Ninmer

“I appreciate his service to our country. World War II veteran, two Silver Stars, oak leaf cluster, and Purple Heart. I wish I could tell him how proud I am of his accomplishments in his service to our country.”
-Dorothy Hazen

“Donald Peters Sr. introduced me to the night sky and constellations. To this day, I love the starry nights.”
-Debbie Peters Evans

“My dad, Angel L. Roman, served during the Korean War.”
-Rosa Santiago

“My dad, Ernest P Asebedo, Army Air Corps, WWII 339th Fighter Squadron.”
-Elena Gill
