Read from current board members on why they joined the ALA Foundation’s mission:
“I choose to serve because the Foundation supports critical ALA programs, and, in so doing, strengthens units in their work with America’s veterans. During my term, I hope to raise awareness of the ALA Foundation, to increase both donations and grant awards, and to share my enthusiasm for the Foundation’s mission with the other board members.”
- Cathe MacInnes, Foundation president
“The ALA Foundation has touched and influenced the lives of thousands of veterans. While volunteering at the Veterans Creative Arts Festival for five years, I noted the metamorphosis of veterans as they blossomed in their confidence and artistic talents. Veteran Projects Fund grants have supported transitional housing for veterans who are intent on successfully reintegrating into their communities. As a member of the ALAF Board of Directors, I am interested in promoting both donations to the Foundation and an increase in ALA grant applications that assist veterans.”
- Diane Duscheck, ALA Foundation vice president and ALA Past National President
“I chose to serve on the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation Board because I believe in the process, having obtained a grant for my unit in South Carolina and also helping them navigate a second grant after I left the area. I hope to accomplish encouraging more units and departments to apply for the grants during my tenure.”
- Anne Parker, Foundation secretary
“I chose to serve on the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation Board because service has always been central to who I am. As a wife and mother in a military-connected family and as a nonprofit founder and community advocate, I deeply value the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening veterans, military families, and the communities that support them. The mission aligns closely with my own work centered on access, advocacy, and connecting people to critical resources. During my three-year term, I hope to help expand the Foundation’s reach and visibility, strengthen partnerships, and support innovative funding and engagement strategies that allow the Foundation to serve more veterans and families with greater impact. I am especially focused on advancing programs that increase access to resources, elevate underrepresented voices, and ensure the Foundation continues to grow as a trusted and responsive partner in communities nationwide.”
- Shawnika Hunt, elected director
“I joined the board because a cause dear to me was launched as a result of funding by the ALA Foundation. HEAL HER Art, an art wellness program for women veterans, has helped — and, in some cases, rescued — hundreds of veterans over its now nearly eight years in operation. As a board member, I hope to inspire other ALA members to take advantage of this incredible resource and help the veterans they see in need.”
- Marge Christianson, elected director
