The merits of monthly giving

Making a large, one-time donation isn’t in the cards for everyone, especially in today’s world. However, monthly giving might be a better option. There are many positive aspects of monthly giving that make it an ideal method of supporting the American Legion Auxiliary or the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation.

Monthly giving is easier on the finances

Despite how overwhelming it can seem to donate every month, it can be ideal for one’s finances. Monthly giving allows a donor to make a large gift, just over a long period of time. A $300 one-time gift may be too great of a donation to make at any given time. However, if that gift is spread out through 12 months, it’s much more feasible and can be increased or decreased as personal finances require.

ALA member Amanda Washburn speaks highly of monthly giving to the ALA or ALAF Foundation. “The best part of the monthly donations is it fits into a person’s budget,” Amanda said. “I think, for younger members, that is key.” ALA member Carol Campbell had good things to say as well: “It’s just a wonderful way to give back,” she said, “and I believe the ALA Foundation can meet the needs of our veterans and our military.”

Monthly giving as a healthy habit

No one can ever have too many healthy habits, and that is exactly what monthly giving is: a conscious effort to consistently help support an organization’s mission. This habit greatly benefits the donor, who gets to witness the impact their monthly gift has, and also the veterans, military, and their families who will know they are receiving consistent support because a donor decided to engage in a healthy habit.

Elected Director of the ALA Foundation, Carrie Davenport, knows the value of monthly giving: “I became a monthly donor primarily because I see the value in creating healthy habits. We can all say we are going to donate later. … Then you think about how many times do I waste $10 when I’m randomly shopping?” Carrie said.

A monthly gift to the ALA or ALA Foundation can be used to provide art kits to veterans in the Veterans Creative Arts Festival, to assist members who have suffered from a natural disaster, to give new bed linens to a veterans homeless shelter, or to help teach veterans important therapeutic skills such as gardening.

Any type of donation to the ALA or ALA Foundation is important and impactful, whether it is time spent volunteering or through financial donations. Monthly giving provides a unique opportunity for anyone at any donation level to have a consistent, meaningful impact on veterans, military, and their families.
