Incoming high school seniors from across the United States are preparing and packing for an experience like no other.

After completing their respective American Legion Auxiliary Girls State programs, these students are embarking on a weeklong event where they not only get to learn about the American political and government system, the ALA’s legacy of Service Not Self, and the sacrifices of our servicemembers, but they get to have a deeper understanding of themselves.

As these young senators are in the throes of packing for Washington, D.C., ALA Girls Nation alumnae share how to enjoy the experience to the fullest.

When asked, “What is the best piece of advice you wish you knew before your session?” alums of all ages chimed in with impactful tips.

Along with all the other packing essentials, here are some words of wisdom the incoming ALA Girls Nation 2026 senators can take with them on their journey:

“Bring that portable fan. It’s hot in D.C.” — Shamya Wilkins

“Step out of your comfort zone and embrace the unexpected.” — Maya Barmecha

“Pack comfortable shoes! You walk a lot, and your heels and feet will feel it!” — Lexi Blankenship

“Say yes to new experiences, meet as many people as you can, and enjoy every moment!” — Fatimah Naraghi

“Eat a good breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Days are long and you need the fuel!” — Rachel Lawrence
