What to know about ALA’s 2018 National Convention

The 2018 American Legion Auxiliary National Convention is being held Aug. 24-30 in Minneapolis, Minn. This will be the ALA’s 98th annual National Convention.

The American Legion will also hold its 2018 National Convention in Minneapolis Aug. 24-30. This will be the Legion’s 100th annual National Convention.

A few highlights of the week include: pre-convention programs meetings (starting at 10 a.m. Aug. 25), the joint patriotic memorial service (11 a.m. Aug. 26), National Convention parade (4 p.m. Aug. 26), opening convention session (8 a.m. Aug. 27), Will Bowen, Complaint Free World (8:05 a.m. Aug. 28), and the installation of the 2018-2019 national officers (2 p.m. Aug. 29). Remember, Minneapolis is in the Central time zone; The times listed are Central time.

Did you know:

—The American Legion Auxiliary’s National Constitution states the National Convention of the ALA is required to be at the same time and place as The American Legion National Convention.

— The annual National Convention is the legislative body of the American Legion Auxiliary. The convention is called for the purpose of electing officers for the ensuing year, amending the National Constitution & Bylaws, receiving reports of national officers and committees, and for any other business that may be brought up.

— Each department is entitled to five delegates and one additional delegate for each 1,500 members or major fraction thereof, whose current dues have been received by the national treasurer 30 days prior to the meeting of said convention, and to one alternate for each delegate. In addition to the above, members of the National Executive Committee (including the national president, national vice president, national division vice presidents, past national presidents, national chaplain, and national historian) are delegates-at-large to the National Convention with vote, to be exercised with their departments.

— Each delegate is entitled to one vote. The vote of any absent delegates, who are not represented by an alternate, will be cast by the majority of the delegates present from her department.

— Department officers, unless elected as delegates or alternates to the National Convention, have no privilege in the convention except as guests of their respective delegations.
